LENT 2011, Day 26

I have bitten off more than I can chew. I didn't have time yesterday to wade through all that Mark 2 teaches us. My agenda didn't permit me the time I longed to have. I wanted to immerse myself in Mark since he was who I spontaneously chose to follow in this part of my Lenten journey.

I cursorily re-read Mark 2 this morning - knowing I have to move on. What jumped out at me is the issue of conflict. Jesus has just started his ministry - the crowds are loving Him - and he is embroiled in conflict. He raises the hackles of the religious leaders by drawing immediate attention to his ability to forgive sin. He further annoys them by eating with the marginalized of society - tax collectors and (boo hiss) sinners. Not only does he eat with them - but he actually calls Matthew (aka Levi) as a disciple - one of his inner circle. Then to add further insult to injury, when they ask him about fasting, he disses their 'old' way - represented by old wineskins - and promotes the new way - His way - represented by new wineskins. What He has come to teach won't work within their parameters. They are all about the rules - He is all about the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, self control.

Just a brief bunny trail - I heard a lady explain that all of these are encompassed by LOVE, which includes all that follows in the list. I liked her explanation. Either way, in this chapter, Jesus makes a point of creating conflict, not just finding himself in the middle of it by default. He concludes his conspicuous conflict-creation by violating the Pharisees' rules about the Sabbath as another opportunity to prove a point - His claim of Lordship.

I don't have time right now to share any further thoughts - - and I'm a bit frustrated that I'm not keeping on schedule. Today was supposed to be Chapter 3. It will have to wait until later.

One of the things I've been busy with is preparing for a Singspiration at church on Sunday. The songs we are going to be singing are about the blood of Jesus - something not sung so much in churches any more....and pure praise honoring the perfect Lamb who was slain - the only One who is Worthy to open the scrolls. I'm excited to get to sing those songs with others who come to praise. To set aside time to worship. It is perfect for leading into Passover and Easter....

APRIL 10, 2011 SINGSPIRATION

Call to Worship: Psalm 100

Opening Prayer

GREAT ARE YOU, LORD

AT THE CROSS
OH THE BLOOD OF JESUS
WERE YOU THERE?
CHRIST AROSE

THERE IS A REDEEMER
NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD
ARE YOU WASHED IN THE BLOOD
POWER IN THE BLOOD

JESUS PAID IT ALL
GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN
HE LIVES
BECAUSE HE LIVES

THEREFORE THE REDEEMED OF THE LORD
HE IS LORD
LORD, I LIFT YOUR NAME ON HIGH
MAJESTY
THOU ART WORTHY

Scripture reading: Revelation 5

REVELATION SONG: WORTHY IS THE LAMB WHO WAS SLAIN

The Lyrics we will be singing are:

GREAT ARE YOU, LORD

Holy Lord, most Holy Lord;
You alone are worthy of my praise
O Holy Lord, most Holy Lord
With all of my heart I sing

Great are You, Lord
Worthy of praise
Holy and true,
Great are You, Lord, most holy Lord.

AT THE CROSS
Alas! and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For sinners such as I?

At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree! Refrain

OH, THE BLOOD OF JESUS
Oh, the blood of Jesus! Oh, the blood of Jesus!
Oh, the blood of Jesus! It washes white as snow.

WERE YOU THERE?

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh___, oh________, oh,
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when he rose up from the dead?
Were you there when he rose up from the dead?
Oh___, oh________, oh,
Sometimes I feel like shouting glory, glory, glory
Were you there when He rose up from the dead?

CHRIST AROSE

Low in the grave He lay,
Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day,
Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed,
Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead,
Jesus my Lord! Refrain

Death cannot keep its Prey,
Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away,
Jesus my Lord! Refrain

THERE IS A REDEEMER
There is a Redeemer,
Jesus, God's own Son,
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Holy One,

Thank you oh my Father,
For giving us Your Son,
And leaving Your Spirit,
'Til the work on Earth is done.

Jesus my Redeemer,
Name above all names,
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Hope for sinners slain. Refrain

NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

..........

ARE YOU WASHED IN THE BLOOD?

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Refrain

Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb;
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean,
O be washed in the blood of the Lamb! Refrain

..........

POWER IN THE BLOOD

Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood.

There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is pow’r, pow’r, wonder-working pow’r
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide;
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. Refrain

Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Sin-stains are lost in its life-giving flow;
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. Refrain

Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There’s pow’r in the blood, pow’r in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There’s wonderful pow’r in the blood. Refrain

JESUS PAID IT ALL
– read – then sing 1st verse & chorus
1. I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

2. For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

3. And now complete in Him,
My robe, His righteousness,
Close sheltered ’neath His side,
I am divinely blest.

4. Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.

5. When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

6. And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
I’ll lay my trophies down,
All down at Jesus’ feet.

JESUS PAID IT ALL

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow. Repeat Refrain

..........

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Grace, grace, God’s grace
Grace that can pardon and cleanse within
Grace, grace, God’s grace
Grace that is greater than all my sin.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive? Refrain

..........

HE LIVES!
(Alfred Ackley CCLI# 49888)
I serve a risen Savior,
He's in the world today;
I know that He is living,
Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him
He's always near.

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He lives salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me
I see His loving care,
And though my heart grows weary
I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
Thro' all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing
Will come at last. Refrain

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
Lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs
To Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him,
The help of all who find,
None other is so loving,
So good and kind. Refrain

..........

BECAUSE HE LIVES
God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

Repeat refrain

Words: Bill & Gloria Gaither 1970 CCLI#49888

THEREFORE THE REDEEMED OF THE LORD

Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return,
And come with singing unto Zion;
And everlasting joy shall be upon their head.

Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return,
And come with singing unto Zion;
And everlasting joy shall be upon their head.

They shall obtain gladness and joy;
And sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

From the earth to the cross my debt to pay
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky
